British culture is a very important topic we need to know if we want to go abroad and to act correctly in different specific situations.
In this blog we will focus on superstition, an issue that despite it was more present some years ago, is still a part of British culture and its members.

Mirrors and numbers

Freaking out because you discover that you have just broken a mirror (right)?
You should, it is a terrible thing to do. It will give you seven years of misfortune.
The reason behind this belief is probably the old idea that a person's soul is in their reflection, so that if you smash your mirror, your soul will be damaged too, doomming them to an early death, and not giving them an entry to heaven.
Are there any ways of making up for this bad luck then? Yes, if you very carefully pick up all the broken pieces and throw them into a river of stream, then the bad luck will be "washed away".

Of all numbers thirteen is the best known for its bad luck.
Some people claim that the number is bad luck because 13 people sat down for the Last Supper before Jesus was crucified, and with this in mind few hosts will serve dinner with thirteen at the table.

The number seven also has some superstition connected to it. It took God seven days to create the world, and any association with the number is lucky. The seventh son of the seventh son is the most lucky of men, and when people talk about the "seven year itch" they mean
that every seven years a person's personality undergoes a complete change.
